  1. Identify potentially mycotoxin-producing fungi that occur in corn fields and grains stored for commercialization in Portugal.
  2. Detect and identify mycotoxins potentially associated with previously identified fungi.
  3. Determine the frequency of the most important mycotoxins from an agricultural point of view.
  4. Develop, test and demonstrate new agricultural systems that limit the presence of the previously mentioned fungi and the subsequent damage to grain quality.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

  1. Implement a temperature and moisture content monitoring system at all stages of the corn production chain.
  2. Implement and validate rapid methods of screening mycotoxins in some phases of corn production.
  3. Develop forecasting models and a new decision support process, MICOTOX ALERT, which integrates the pre- and post-harvest stages to guide the optimal recovery of corn lots as early as possible, depending on the quality and levels of contamination, ensuring safe introduction into the food chain and compound feed.

Other objectives of the project and that result from the implementation of the action plan are the demonstration, dissemination and dissemination of the knowledge generated in the operational group. ANPROMIS has as tradition the organization, for several years, of annual events, very participated, attended more than 800 farmers and agricultural technicians (500 participants in the colloquia and 300 participants in the field days). Taking advantage of the realization of these initiatives, one of the objectives will be the dissemination of the project and the provisional results that we are obtaining. During the development of the project, the operational group will have the opportunity to present results at the annual anpromis congress, promoting a working session dedicated to mycotoxins and where the “Manual of good practices for monotorization and minimization of the effect of mycotoxins on the national production of maize” will be presented. In addition, dissemination in the scientific community, in general, and among mycologists, toxicologists and metrologists, in particular, as well as in other initiatives in which partners participate, such as the National Rural Network platform, the Inovar Network and reference competitions of the national agricultural sector.   EXPECTED/ACHIEVED RESULTS

  • Identify pre- and post-harvest best practices to reduce levels of mycotoxin contamination;
  • create a computerised system for recording and monitoring the temperature and moisture content of samples collected at the various sampling points;
  • Developed a model for predicting the level of contamination according to agricultural practices and different weather scenarios;
  • Create a model for predicting the level of contamination depending on the humidity and temperature conditions that occur during storage;
  • develop an integrated risk management system, taking into account prior crop management (Good agricultural practices), management during harvest and post-harvest and enabling the separation and qualification of lots;
  • Develop a new product, MICOTOX ALERT;
  • Develop a good practice manual for monitoring and minimizing the effect of mycotoxins on national maize production;
  • Disseminate technical itineraries, including soil treatments, fertilization and application of the most appropriate fungicides to combat the problem and their awareness of the sector with credible and current information.

Dissemination and Activity:

  • Organization of an event for the dissemination, among others, of a manual of good practices for monitoring and minimizing the effect of mycotoxins on the national production of maize;
  • Development of technical routes, including soil treatments, fertilization and application of more suitable fungicides to combat the problem and their awareness of the sector with credible and current information.
