Goals: The project 'ALENTEJO CIRCULAR ́, a partnership between ISQ and the University of Évora, has as its central objective to sensitize and mobilize the economic agents of alentejo in the rows of olive oil, wine and swine farming for the adoption of the Circular Economy model, aiming to promote the creation of value in agricultural and agro-industrial farms, and consequently in the region, through the transfer of knowledge on practices and technologies for the efficient use of resources and the recovery of waste. The Alentejo Circular project aims to:

  • Establish a current diagnosis of circularity in the rows of olive oil, wine and swine farming;
  • Identify and describe best practices in the area of the circular economy, at national and international level;
  • Characterize and quantify resources and residues, in order to complete the knowledge regarding recovery cycles;
  • Identify possible solutions for waste recovery and efficient use of resources;
  • Demonstrate the benefits of the adoption of the Circular Economy model and transfer knowledge of associated technologies and methodologies;
  • Promote the collaborative spirit between companies and between them and the scientific and technological system, in particular directed to the implementation of the circular economy in value chains;
  • Understand the barriers to achieving identified circular economy opportunities in order to inform all stakeholders.

Based on a mature diagnosis in the field of Circular Economy in alentejo, and the most recent knowledge at international level, ISQ and the University of Évora undertake a set of awareness-raising, training and mobilization of companies aimed at the realization of circular logics in the olive oil, wine and swine ranks, seeking to establish the basic conditions for the future development of circularity initiatives by companies in the region. Thus, the expected results with this project are:

  • Knowledge of the current regional diagnosis, regarding the implementation of circular economy practices in the ranks under this regard;
  • Identification of solutions for the recovery of waste and efficient use of resources in the ranks under this year;
  • Changes in behaviors and ways of thinking associated with the linear economic model;
  • Training of business frameworks for new skills associated with the circular economy, including current and emerging practices in the efficient use of resources and recovery of waste;
  • Greater communication between companies in the region and between them and the scientific and technological system as a way to enhance circularity initiatives and new innovation projects.

This project received funding from the Alentejo Regional Operational Program 2020, corresponding to the operation with the code ALT20-01-0853-FEDER-000023.
