AI for water efficiency
ISQ will present tomorrow, February 28, "innovative strategies based on artificial intelligence (AI) that allow the water industry to operate its systems in a more efficient, safe and less energy-efficient manner," says Ricardo Rato, ISQ's R&D Director. The communication will be made during the debate that the Portuguese Association of Water Drainage Distribution (APDA) organizes, in Porto, on "Transition to the Circular Economy in the Water Sector". ISQ is on the "innovation and technology at the service of the circular economy in the water sector" panel. These strategies fit the Life SWSS program – Smart Water Supply System – an ISQ-led project that aims to demonstrate a digital platform with simulation, forecasting and optimization models to support the operation of water supply systems. It aims to reduce water losses, energy consumption (-15%) and greenhouse gas emissions by making systems smarter. It has partners Grupo Águas de Portugal, ADP LVT/EPAL, Águas do Algarve (AdP), Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and Hidromod. The Circular Economy, as a conceptual model or operational tool, will increase water efficiency in different sectors. It is unavoidable that water should play a central role in the "transition to the Circular Economy", in particular in terms of optimising its uses, reducing consumption and losses, using rainwater, reusing treated waste water for compatible purposes and valuing slamas from treatment plants and livestock effluents, as a source of organic matter, nutrients and energy, which can be recovered and reused, observing the quality criteria required. Resolution of the Council of Ministers No. 190-A/2017 of 11 December adopted the Circular Economy Action Plan in Portugal, in line with principles accompanying, in particular the guidelines of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals, with a view to improving resource efficiency – including water – and a significant increase in its reuse and recycling. It is also essential to take account of the European Circular Economy Action Plan, part of the EU 2020 Initiative, in a Europe more efficient in terms of strategic resources, the main benefits of which focus on the security of its supply and the efficiency of its use – "water security", in particular.
